In-Stock Low Fire Clays (cone 06-04)

Standard 100

Standard 100: The Clay Lady’s Clay is an excellent white firing clay for both throwing and hand-building. Works well with most commercial glazes and underglazes. Should be used by studio artists and advanced programs looking for an all purpose clay. Contains imported talc.

Standard 103

Standard 103: Standard 103 is a low fire plastic terracotta designed for the classroom. Traditional terracotta color at Cone 06 (featured) and brick red at Cone 2.

In-Stock Mid Fire Clays (cone 5-6)

B-mix 5

Laguna B-Mix 5 (WC401) offers the same characteristics enjoyed by their Cone 10 B-Mix. Its smooth, porcelain texture is a pleasure to throw and form, and it fires to a cream color in oxidation.

B-mix 5 with Grog

Laguna B-Mix 5 w/ Grog (WC436) is the popular B-Mix 5 with the addition of very fine grog that makes for a more forgiving body with a slight texture and minimal speckling.

Laguna #55

Laguna 55 (WC607) is an off-white stoneware clay ideal for wheel work and widely used for functional pottery. Light speckling from fireclay enhances its appearance. Neutral glazes remain unaffected, allowing for purer color.

Laguna #65

Laguna 65 (WC609) is a smooth white stoneware, good for throwing and production of functional whiteware.

Laguna #90

Laguna 90 (WC614) stoneware is formulated with fine grog and red art to obtain a rich dark color. Good for outdoor pots as well as functional pottery and sculpture when fired to Cone 6.

Speckled Buff

Laguna Speckled Buff (WC403) is low in sand and grog content with a smooth texture. An excellent throwing body. The color palette is perhaps described as ‘desert’ or ‘Southwest’. Fired in oxidation, Speckled Buff falls into the tan/brown color range. This clay contains manganese.

Laguna #15

Laguna 15 (WC616) is a translucent, cone 6 porcelain. An excellent grolleg body for throwing thin pieces.

Laguna #16

Laguna 16 (WC617) is grolleg cone 6 porcelain. This clay body is very plastic and perfect for throwing and hand building. Works amazing with glazes and reduces crazing.

Laguna Purge Clay

Laguna Purge Clay (WC639) is a pugged, and de-aired moist clay produced by the Laguna Clay Company that is sold at a discount because it is the result of mixing different clay bodies during production.

Standard #112

Standard 112 Brown Clay is a plastic clay for wheel and modeling. Granular manganese gives a speckled surface. The ideal temperature for the best color is cone 5. Good in oxidation or reduction firing. Please be note that this clay contains manganese.

Standard #214

Standard 214 Scott’s Red Clay is a smooth red stoneware clay that is excellent for both wheel thrown and hand built projects. Interacts well with commercial glazes.

Standard #266

Standard 266 Umbria gives a reduction-like dark brown color in an electric kiln. Smooth and plastic. Good for all techniques. Please note that this clay contains manganese. Standard also recommends a cone 5 firing for this clay.

Standard #563

Standard 563 Clayer White is a porcelaneous stoneware body. Good for hand-building and throwing.

Standard #630

Standard 630 White Stoneware contains fire clay and mullite which enhances thermal properties.

KYMudworks ICEMAN

KYMudworks Iceman premium white stoneware that is a pleasure to throw and durable when fired. Super plastic but great for handbuilding as well as throwing. Fires to a very light grey/off-white. Excellent color response and good glaze fit with the vast majority of commercial glaze brands. Occasional tiny iron specking can happen due to the nature of it being a stoneware clay.

KYMUDWORKS ICEMAN W/GROG

KYMudworks Iceman w/ Grog is the same claybody as Iceman, but with 6% added grog for increased tooth. More forgiving than standard Iceman, it is a fan-favorite for larger throwing projects and hand building. Also for potters who just like a little more “structure” or texture to their throwing clays. See Iceman description below for more information.

KYMudworks Sheltowee

KYMudworks Sheltowee is a super smooth, tight, and plastic body that fires a deep red at cone 5 and dark red brown at cone 6. Throws and hand builds well. Matures cone 5-7. Won’t warp or bloat at cone 7 if slow fired through the last 300-400F. Gorgeous in soda and wood firings too!

KYMUDWORKS Speckled Turtle

KYMudworks Speckled Turtle is a warm brown speckled plastic clay good for all forming techniques. Offers nice warmth tones at cone 6 and gives a reduction look to glazes. Contains granular manganese.

KYMudworks Brown Bear

KYMudworks Brown Bear is a super smooth, plastic body that fires a dark chocolate brown at cones 5-6. Won’t bloat at soft cone 7 if fired slow through the last 300-400F. Contains no grog. Gives nice warmth to glazes, giving that reduction look to them in oxidation.

**The manufacturer recommends bisque firing SLOW speed between ^06 and ^04 and always SLOW speed glaze firing. If you are having trouble getting some brands of commercial glazes to not pinhole you can always try bisque firing to ^03. If you are using Mudworks glazes exclusively you only need to bisque to ^06 unless you prefer a higher bisque. *Our tests with clear glaze gave us little to no bubbles or green tint to the clear glaze.

KYMUDWORKS Dark Star

KYMudworks Dark Star is perfect if you like speckles in your clay but are looking for a body that keeps your glazes brighter, check out this new clay body. Based off of our very popular Ice Man clay body, Dark Star is easy to throw and handbuild with and is very forgiving, smooth, and plastic.

** The manufacturer recommends slow firing speeds in both bisque and glaze when using any clay body that contains manganese specks due to off gassing. This allows the gasses time to escape properly from the ware. If fired past cone 6, you may experience bloating.

Laguna #850

Laguna 850 (WC627) is an off-white, typical light stoneware throwing clay. Medium texture for good tooth. Contains fire clay, no additional color.

Laguna B-mix 10

Laguna B-Mix 10 (WC379) is one of the most popular clays in the U.S. A cream-white clay that is easy to throw and form. Fires gray/white in reduction and lighter in oxidation. Similar to porcelain but throws like a dream.

Laguna B-Mix 10 Wood

Laguna B Mix 10 Wood (WC899) is a specially formulated version of Laguna’s popular B-mix body for wood and salt firing. Takes Salt and Soda well and exhibits very nice flashing characteristics in wood firings. Holds up well in Cone 12 atmospheric firings.

Laguna Grolleg 550

Laguna Grolleg 550 (WC631) is made primarily of English Grolleg. Contains plasticizers to make this the finest translucent porcelain available for throwing, thin slab work and handbuilding. The “standard” porcelain for the US Northeastern potters.

Laguna Max’s Paper

Laguna Max’s Paper Clay (WC953) fires gray-stony-white in reduction (cone 10), off white at oxidation (cone 5), and bright white at cone 05 (raku). Medium textured, low shrinkage body designed for large hand-built sculpture and tile work. Contains a moderate amount of fine/medium mesh grog.

Laguna #900

Laguna 900 (WC628) is considered by many to be the best clay for production pottery. Ideal for those who Sgraffito, wax resist and want a finer texture to minimize picking. Great for planters, etc.

Standard #153

Standard 153 Stoneware Clay is a soft warm beige in oxidation, rich gray brown in reduction. Responds well to all techniques. Excellent for production potters and classroom use color.

Standard #181

Standard 181 White w/ Molochite is a very smooth white stoneware body. Good for functional ware. Contains very fine porcelain grog. Has no fire clay.

Standard #182

Standard 182 Angel White is a versatile Cone 6-10 clay that is a near white plastic stoneware body with no grog. Good for use with bright glazes.

Standard #437

Standard 437 Troy Porcelain is a versatile, plastic English kaolin body. It throws and takes glazes well. It can be used in reduction, wood, and salt firings. Translucent when thin. There is a wide range of color/texture in long wood firings.

Raku 250

Raku 250 (WC636) is a smooth, excellent throwing Raku clay with exceptional thermal shock resistance. Works well under the toughest conditions.

Our clay company and pottery supply store are now open and operating out of our new studio location.

We have started by offering a selection of key pottery tools and glazes and will continue to expand as we learn what items are most needed by the Western NC pottery community. We can special order from any of the vendors we are proud to partner with.

Clay pricing & quantity discounts

Moist clay pricing varies depending on the clay body and the quantity ordered. Quantity discounts fall within the ranges below. For moist clays, discounts are applied based on the total weight of your order.

50–200 lbs | 250–450 lbs | 500–950 lbs | 1,000–1,950 lbs | 2,000+ lbs

Raw materials also qualify for discount pricing, but discounts apply per material and cannot be combined.

We are clay distributors

We are proud clay distributors of Laguna, Standard and Kentucky Mudworks Clays. We recommend you plan ahead for large orders and speciality orders. Planning ahead in the winter is highly recommended.
