The Art League is proud to support Sarah Wells Rolland, founder and owner of The Village Potters, as she rebuilds following the devastation of Hurricane Helene. This event is a way for us to give back to Sarah, who has been a key mentor in the development of our own clay studio. The Village Potters was one of Western North Carolina’s premier ceramic galleries, featuring four showrooms and offering a range of classes, workshops, and firings.Sarah has been “pushing clay to its limit” for over 30 years. At this stage in her career, she focuses on teaching and mentoring emerging potters, sharing her techniques, and inspiring the next generation of artists.Sarah will be joined by resident artist Katie Messersmith, who will demonstrate her intricate slip-trailed dot techniques, adding detailed surface patterns to both functional and larger statement pieces.Event Overview:This is a unique opportunity to learn from a local “Master” as Sarah shares her process and aesthetic in both a presentation and live demonstration. Presentation: Sarah will recount the history of The Village Potters Clay Center, from its inception to its thriving community and recovery after the flood. She will also discuss her artistic process and approach to clay. Demonstration: Known for her engaging teaching style, Sarah will demonstrate techniques for transforming thrown forms into original works of art. She will cover: Throwing with all the clay Altering and darting shaping, shaving, and adding clayCreating complementary handles (pulled and wheel-thrown) Sculpting, spouts, and form enhancements Sarah will also discuss her aesthetic decisions and how she creates movement and line in her pieces.
