Making handles can be so exciting and really expand your work, especially functional pots. There are a lot of considerations when applying handles and many ways to make them. In this workshop we will explore some of the approaches that not only make the pot even better but you don’t need any special tools.
I hear these statements a lot, “I just can’t make good handles”, “I hate making handles”, “I am afraid of handles”, or “I avoid handles”. I wont say making great handles is easy because nothing about making pots is. We learn by taking risks. I believe in order to work toward mastering your craft exploring handles and growing in the skill of making them with your hands is an important element.
We will put handles on cups, baking dishes, utensil holders, vessels, and an overhead handle too. I love discussing all the nuances of a handle, functionality, negative space, visual weight and points of interest, addressing fit when the pot is leather hard and the handle is wet, aesthetic decisions so the handle adds to the form and small additions that push a handle from good to great.
Making pots is a highly focused work and it should always be enjoyable. Making great pots means taking risk, and being willing to lose a pot you worked hard to make. This workshop is going to challenging but it is also going to be fun!
