In this class, students will learn the basics of how to use reeds to add handles and decorative reed elements to their pottery. We will share our work and connect with one another as we move step by step through the reed handle making process.
Course Objectives: During the workshop, time will be allotted to the following objectives:
- Creating a sense of community among the students where they are encouraged to share about themselves, their work, support one another throughout the workshop, and get to know one another.
- Taking students step-by-step through the process of adding a reed handle to their pottery.
1 gallon bucket filled 1/4 way with water or similar.
Round reed #3 (2.25mm) or similar.
Instructor Bio: Tori Motyl is a ceramic artist specializing in large scale functional and sculptural vessels made from wild clay she digs herself. She has been making and teaching since 2011 after receiving her MSEd in Visual Arts from SUNY New Paltz. In 2016 Tori began an apprenticeship and then residency at The Village Potters Clay Center where she was first introduced to reed handles. She has taught a series of workshops over the years at The Village Potters Clay Center and most recently was the Craft and Overall winner of the Made in NC Awards put on by OurState Magazine in 2020. Currently Tori is working out of Reems Creek Pottery in Weaverville, NC. Tori’s passion for teaching is evident in every class as she connects with each student, learns about their unique direction in clay, and offers knowledge and resources to help her students achieve their goals. Tori spends her time making art, teaching, organizing the North Carolina Ceramic Arts Festival, and enjoying life in the mountains with her family and friends.

All our Live Online Classes are broadcast from our excellent Education Studio Media Center. We use 3 cameras, providing front, side and overhead perspectives. Our audio is excellent using a noise canceling microphone. We have a wonderful technical staff.
