Description

Wheel Throwing 201/202: LIDS GALORE with Julia Mann

This intermediate-advanced class is tailored for potters who wish to hone their skills in making inset and overhang lids for vessels including small sugar bowls, lidded jars, and casseroles. Students will learn how to throw lids, create flanges, and shape knobs that seamlessly harmonize with the vessel’s overall design.

Discover diverse techniques for crafting lidded pottery with Julia, as she encourages you to push your boundaries and refine this important pottery-making skill set. You will walk away with better pots (with lids)!

FIRINGS: Cone 10

Skill Level 201/202

View our full Skill Level Guide for Classes here.

TYPE OF STUDENT:

This class is designed for students looking to push their skill sets to a more advanced level and beginning to build a body of work. At this point of study, students are learning and adding more approaches to making work and pushing the limits of the clay in their exploration.

EXISTING SKILLS SET RECOMMENDED FOR STUDENTS:

In order to be successful in this class, it is recommended that students are fully proficient in working with clay and have the ability to use multiple techniques to create intentional forms. They should also be confidently able to throw a variety of forms using 4+ lbs of clay and be ready to explore specific surface design, glaze application, and/or firing approach to create individualized work.

Reviews from former students:

Julia Mann’s class is a must-take for any intermediate potter! The class has a realistic pace and provides studio time between sessions to complete each type of piece. Julia’s demos are clear and she adapts them to the design ideas of each student. Hard parts? Julia will walk you through them. If you get stuck while throwing (making the same mistake over and over), Julia can watch your technique, identify exactly what you are doing wrong, and tell you what you need to change. She is patient and encouraging, and wants every student to succeed. At the end of the class, all pieces are fired to Cone 10, which can add beautiful reduction effects to the glazes. Don’t miss the opportunity to take this class (or any other) from Julia Mann! – Barbara Hebert
