“Glaze 101: Demystifying the Glaze Factor”
with Sarah Wells Rolland
Do you wish you had a better understanding of glazing, and actually looked forward to the process and experimentation? If we were to take a survey of potters I think we would find that glazing is most often the most intimidating part of the pottery making process. The final stage of working on your piece, glazing and firing, is often where we manage to destroy our work and experience repeated disappointment and frustration. If a piece does come out wonderfully we often don’t know why. Understanding glaze ingredients, their properties, and their influences in a glaze is the first step to demystify the process. It leads us into an exciting journey of experimentation and growing understanding that can lead to making original, rewarding and consistent work.
This workshop is for the beginner to advanced potter who has been glazing without knowledge, or as we like to say “glazing in the dark.”
This half day workshop is designed to establish a foundational understanding of ingredients in a glaze and their functions. We will learn about the many and diverse materials available and their influences. We will discuss the basic ingredients and qualities of matte, satin and gloss glazes. Understanding oxides and stains and how they interact as fluxes and colorants will be explored. We will briefly touch on adjusting glazes.
