Resident Potter: Bernie Segal
“My aim is to approach each stone with respect for its unique qualities and to bring to each sculpture, my understanding and appreciation of form, my sensitivity to the emotional potential, and my willingness to explore and expose both myself and the stone in the process. Each stone presents a new and separate experience for me.”
Bernie Segal is a nationally recognized sculptor whose works have been shown and sold throughout the United States and Europe, with exhibits in San Francisco, Carmel, New York, Miami, Sante Fe, Seattle and Asheville, North Carolina.
Bernie received a Master of Arts in Sculpture from San Francisco State University where he studied with renowned teachers John Gutmann, Ernst Mundt, and Alex Nepote. While he no longer works with large stone sculpture, his ceramic forms and return to Raku firing sing strongly his passion for his art.
His passion for artistic form and its emotional impact is not an academic one, however, but one that has developed over more than 50 years of personal experience watching pure forms give rise to authentic expression.
At 79, Bernie is not only an accomplished sculptor, he is a champion fencer, a seasoned actor, and a fine arts instructor with more than 30 years of teaching experience in the San Francisco Bay area.
